Living Below Your Means: My Secret to Bouncing Back from Financial Hardship

Have you ever considered taking a financial course to really understand how to budget, save, give, and spend? I spent part of my 20s learning this and even teaching it and it made a huge difference in my life.

I’ve been through two divorces, both financially devastating. Yes, me, the woman and still, I was able to bounce back because I had a history of saving, living below my means, and keeping a fairly minimalist lifestyle. I know what my core values and money script are, and most of my spending goes toward those things.

For example, I love to travel. I’ve been to quite a few places and already have trips mapped out for 2026..

Homeownership is another thing worth rethinking. It may or may not be for you and that’s okay. I built my first home in my 30s rented it out for a while (that was a nightmare), and selling it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.

It gave me freedom, to travel, to live in different places, and to thrive. If it weren’t for my husband, I wouldn’t be in a home today. I’d rent and enjoy the flexibility that comes with that choice.

I also want to encourage younger folks to remember:
• School is still a great option
• The military is still a great option
• Building a career is still a great option

There are still a few good-paying careers that don’t require a degree, just skills, work ethic, and good moral character.

Also, do your best to marry the right person and if, like me, you don’t and that happens more than once, remember this: you’ll still be just fine. You can try again, or you can choose to be alone. Some people thrive in relationships, some don’t. Both paths are valid.
