Congratulations to the Councilmen in the City of Jobesboro!

We have two siblings (brother and sister), At-large and District 4, serving on the McDonough City Council.

The Charter does not contain a specific provision prohibiting siblings or immediate family members from serving simultaneously on the City Council.

There is also no documented historical precedent of two siblings or immediate family members serving concurrently on the McDonough City Council.

That means, technically, a governing body could be made up entirely of siblings, spouses, cousins, or even parents and adult children… as long as each one meets the requirements of age, residency, and voter registration.

Most people assume rules exist for this and they don’t.

This is why understanding how local government works is so important for our community. When we know the rules, we can better understand the decisions being made and the people making them.

Let’s keep building a better McDonough, together.
