From Newcomer to Civic Connector: Why I Created McDonough 101 (and What’s Coming Next)

When I moved to McDonough in 2021, I had no idea how to get involved in local government or where I fit in as a new resident. I quickly noticed a pattern: many leadership positions were held by people who had lived here for decades, and for those of us just settling in, the path to participation felt… unclear.

I didn’t see a welcome mat for new residents who wanted to contribute.
So I created one.

Welcome to McDonough 101

McDonough 101 – New Member Orientation is a space for new residents, small business owners, renters, and longtime neighbors who want to learn more about how our city and county work. It’s a monthly virtual event (with two in-person sessions per year) where we break down the basics in a friendly, accessible way.

At our July 23rd session, we covered:

  • How McDonough’s local government is structured
  • How Henry County connects with city government
  • Where to find resources and opportunities
  • How to get appointed to local boards
  • The importance of civic participation—no matter your background or how long you’ve lived here

The conversations were honest. The questions were insightful. And the energy in the room reminded me exactly why I launched this initiative.

Our next session will be held on Tuesday, August 27 from 12–1 PM at the McDonough Public Library (doors open at 11:30 AM).
All are welcome. Whether you’ve lived here for three months or thirty years, you belong.

What’s Next? McDonough 201

After so many of you asked, “What’s next?” I’m happy to share that I’m working on McDonough 201—a deeper dive into how to serve, lead, and advocate in your local community. This may include a half-day in-person workshop, guest speakers, and hands-on strategies for those ready to level up their civic engagement.

Whether your goal is to join a board, run for office, advocate for your neighborhood, or simply understand how decisions are made, McDonough 201 will be for you.

Stay tuned for updates. And if you’re not already on the list, head over to CitizensForMcDonough.com and sign up so you don’t miss a thing.

Let’s Build a Better McDonough, Together 🌺

I believe civic education is the gateway to civic power. I’m running for McDonough City Council At-Large not just because I want to serve—but because I understand how to serve, and I want to help you understand too.

We all have a role to play in shaping the future of our city and it starts with showing up.
